  • Theme - Leisure

In the war years entertainment was an essential part of keeping morale high on the home front. In Norwich, dancing took place on a regular basis by the bandstand in Chapelfield Gardens. As this rare and all too brief colour film shows, with so many men, away serving in the forces, women and girls came to dance together under the watchful eye of the park attendant. Several dance crazes emerged during the war, many introduced by the American forces in Britain.Dances like the Jitterbug,Jive and Lindy Hop became very popular. With a shortage of men, line dances like the one seen on the film, allowed any number of friends to join in and dance together.
