This home video, shot in July 1981, documents some of the festivities that took place in Chelmsford, Essex, to celebrate the royal wedding of HRH Prince Charles, Prince of Wales to Lady Diana Spencer.
The town’s streets were decked with bunting, in patriotic red, white and blue, and commemorative shots of the couple decorated lampposts and pylons. Children in elaborate costumes congregated, chaperoned by parents who also getting into the swing of the day. After a fancy dress parade, egg-and-spoon and various obstacle races were held.
Prince Charles and Lady Diana were married on 29th July 1981 at St. Paul’s Cathedral in London. The press dubbed the event a “fairytale” wedding. The ceremony was embraced right across the United Kingdom and Commonwealth countries, where many celebrations and street parties like the one in Chelmsford were held. This film shows that royal weddings have always been a cause for widespread celebration.
