King & Queen at Methwold

  • Theme - Royalty
  • Year - 1943
  • Location - King's Lynn
  • Filmmaker - Mr Wright

Notes

RAF Methwold had been established in 1938, but in 1943 the facilities were dramatically upgraded in order for the airfield to act as a substation for nearby RAF Mildenhall. Three new runways were built which may have been one of the reasons that Methwold had been chosen for a royal visit and tour of inspection. The King and Queen's visit would have been a major boost to morale for the RAF personnel. Although little information is known about the film maker, he must have had some official clearance to be given such close access to the Royal party.

Methwold lost 43 aircraft during war time operations. The airfield was closed in April 1946.
