In And Around Southend - Mayor's Garden Party
- Theme - Leisure
- Year - 1938
- Location - Southend-on-sea
- Filmmaker - Charles Redfearn
This clip shows one of the civic functions organised in Southend in 1938. This is an outdoor Garden Party at Priory Park, Prittlewell hosted by the Mayor and Mayoress of the town, Herbert Arthur Dowsett JP and Mrs Dowsett. Such events were a typical part of the social calendar and were an opportunity for members of the clergy, politicians, local business people and other influential figures to meet with local government officials informally. The dress code was well defined. Men were in tailcoats and top hats while many ladies opted for long dresses, occasional furs and gloves. All the women are wearing hats.
A series of marquees seem to be offering entertainment like palm reading. Many guests are seen enjoying the putting green while the deckchairs provided seating for those wishing to listen to the music played by a traditional brass band.
Another sequence shows a series of performances of modern ballet in the style of Isadora Duncan. This suggests that the ballet provided further entertainment during the afternoon.
